CLEAT Fights to Protect Officers Who Suffer Heart Attacks or Strokes
CLEAT has asked legislators to file bills to extend a workers compensation presumption to peace officers that firefighters already have. HB 1492 by Rep. John Wray and SB 1582 by Sen. Eddie Lucio would amend Chapter 607 of the Government Code to provide that it is presumed that death or disability due to heart attack or stroke suffered by a peace officer is line of duty related. CLEAT’s Chris Jones interviews Austin cardiologist Dr. Jon Sheinberg about the need for this change and the evidence that supports it. Dr. Sheinberg is also a Texas peace officer and CLEAT member.
